Skilled Migration Visa subclasses

Skilled migration visas are divided into subcategories:

Independent Skilled Visa (subclass 189)

For qualified professionals who wish to work and live in Australia, the 189 visa is a points-based permanent residence visa. The 189 visa permits the bearer to stay in Australia permanently, travel within the country, work, bring family members to work or study, and enroll in Medicare.

Nominated Skilled Visa (subclass 190)

The 190 visa is another points-based permanent visa that allows qualified individuals to apply for a permanent residence visa after being nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency, whether they are in or outside of Australia. The visa permits the bearer to stay in Australia forever, travel within the country, work, bring family members to work or study, and enroll in Medicare.

Regional (provisional) Skilled Visa (subclass 491)

The 491 visa is meant to allow invited skilled individuals to apply for a provisional visa after being nominated by an Australian State or Territory government agency or sponsored by a qualifying relative residing in a defined region, whether they are in or outside of Australia. The visa permits the bearer to live, work, and study in a designated Australian regional area, as well as bring family and travel to and from Australia. The visa is valid for 5 years and is the primary pathway to obtaining a permanent Skilled-Regional (subclass 191) Visa.
